Beneath a heavily clouded sky and a canopy of autumnal hues in Tomies Wood, lies O’Sullivans Falls, a tranquil location in one of Ireland’s few remaining Sessile Oak Woods in Co. Kerry. The entirety of this beautiful oak-filled woodland during October is awash with colour and truly offers a therapeutic environment to wile away hours within.

Behind the Image

Ireland was once covered in a staggering 80% of native woodland, featuring vast expanses of birch, alder, ash and the mighty sessile oak that housed an abundance of wildlife under its canopy. Today, after centuries of deforestation & agriculture, that figure sits at a diminutive 2% These statistics mean finding native woodlands of stunning natural beauty, and their awe-inducing displays of colour during Autumn, are sadly a rarity. However, few pockets remain across the country and Tomies Wood is one such incredible space to get lost within. This dreary October afternoon was spent acquiring various compositions of the woodlands but it was O’Sullivan Falls that drew me in with its winding formation and overhanging pops of colour from the trees above.
