Winter Lights
The Rossend sits perched on the stone peninsula of Kinnacorra on Clare Island in County Mayo, Ireland. Croagh Patrick stands tall amongst the tungsten lights of Westport. Orion's Constellation can be seen in the right of the image with Jupiter being the brightest light in the night sky to its left.
Behind the Image
An iconic sight and story to go with it during my childhood, the Rossend shipwreck had always served as a reminder of the power of the Atlantic Ocean, capable of tossing ferries several feet high above the rocky shoreline during stormy conditions. Taking a unique approach to capturing it in its final resting place under the stars, I experimented with some light painting on the wreck to highlight some detail while the panorama stretches to encompass views towards Westport and Roonagh pier. Incidentally, only 6 weeks after capturing the scene, the powerful storm Darwin washed the remainder of the wreck away, never to be seen again after nearly 20 years in her resting place.
